Choosing the best martial arts for kids

You may be aware that learning martial arts can be a good foundation for your child/ren. But how do you choose the right one? The best one? Especially, if you don’t have experience in martial arts yourself?

It’s good to have a basic understanding of Self-Defense vs Sport Martial Arts, but mostly, it’s like choosing a musical instrument. It’s about what your child connects with the most. Guitar, Drums, Piano are all great and wonderful instruments. There’s nothing stopping you from trying them all before deciding. You can learn more than one if you wish!

However, here are some criteria you should consider:

Location / Convenience: How far are you willing to travel? What options are available near you? Learning anything is a commitment. If it’s difficult or inconvenient to get to, it may not be sustainable for you and your family.

Time / Duration: How much time can you devote to your child’s training? How many activities is your child participating in? Every activity demands time commitment. Martial arts will too.

Priorities: Consider the benefits you wish to achieve through martial arts and how much it is worth to you. This will help you prioritize and filter your choices.

Trial classes: Most, if not all, martial art schools offer trial classes because we understand you need to try before you commit. Make the most of this opportunity.

Tips on what to look for:

  • Go to the venue. Are you comfortable there?

  • Observe the staff. How are they with the kids? Are they trustworthy role models?

  • Observe the students and family. Are they happy, attentive, relaxed? Are they excited to be there?

What is NOT important:

  • Style of martial art – this is a personal preference.

  • Instructor rank – a proficient martial artist, isn’t always an indication of a good teacher. Judge the teacher by the standard of students they produce.

We hope this is helpful. Best wishes on your journey.
